Legendary fitness fanatic and wellness expert, Jack LaLanne died on Sunday in his home in Morro Bay, California. He was 96 years old. Jack was a true legend, a man that encouraged and educated millions on the importance of exercise and diet though his popular TV series as well as incredible physical feats. He came up with innovative exercise programs that required little to no equipment, and could be performed anywhere, and was tireless in promoting exercise and diet for better living and longevity. The man not only taught it, he lived it. Consider just a few his extraordinary feats:
1956 Age 42: Set a world record of 1,033 pushups in 23 minutes on You Asked for It, a TV Show with Art Baker.
1957 Age 43: Swam the treacherous Golden Gate Channel, towing a 2,500-pound cabin cruiser. This involved fighting the cold, swift ocean currents that made the 1 mile swim a 6 1/2 mile test of strength and endurance.
1958 Age 44: Maneuvered a paddleboard 30 miles, 9 1/2 hours non-stop from Farallon Islands to the San Francisco shore.
1974 Age 60: Swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman’s Wharf, for a second time handcuffed, shackled and towing a 1,000-pound boat.
More on Jack here.
Thanks, Jack, for everything you did!

A Golden State of Mind, Part 1
California winter. It’s why we pay what we do to live in the Golden State. Since January 1st, we have had solid swell and sunshine with no signs of things letting up anytime soon. Wherever you are we hope you are in great shape for surfing and making the most of these unreal conditions. Now is not the time to bag out of a session because you are surfed out.
Just in case you forgot how good we have it here, check out a shot of our bros over in the UK from Extreme Horizon. Extreme Horizon distributes our Surf Stronger DVDs on the other side of the pond. These guys are paddling out at a North Sea beach break, just before a blizzard. They say it was a balmy -6 degrees. Talk about core. Keep this image in mind next time you second guess paddling out because it’s too cold!
Freezing cold paddle out. Dedication.
Stay healthy, see you in the water.
