California Winter: Surf’s up, are you in surf shape?

I love winter in California. I like crisp weather and consistent swell, and the fact that there are fewer people at the beach and in the water during wintertime. And the past couple weeks have been banner. Pumping swell with no signs of slowing. With more surf in the forecast and with winter really just getting started, this is where it really pays off to be in surf shape. However, if your arms feel like noodles and your pop ups are a little slow, then now is the time to bust some workouts and get in shape. Because if you are fit for surfing you can focus on your cutback instead of your sore shoulders. Our surf workout videos can be performed in as short a time as ten minutes, or up to an hour. The Endurance Conspiracy

Surf Stronger recently connected up with Mountain Timers Tony DeBoom and the Endurance Conspiracy. An athlete owned company inspired by endurance sports and love for the environment, these guys have been making some great stuff out in in Colorado. Go check out their original design work and pick up a cool tee to help inspire some Fall training. Need another reason? Come Hell or High Water Movie Review

Caught the Ventura premiere of “Come Hell or High Water” — the latest surf flick out of the Malloy / Woodshed camp. The premiere was a wonderful gathering of south coast surfers and outdoor enthusiasts, taking in a night of live music, community, free beer, and of course the movie. It all went down in the parking lot of Patagonia HQ, under the stars on a brisk fall night.

The movie was better than I expected and had me engaged throughout. It is an hour plus film, beautifully shot on 16MM chronicling the world’s best bodysurfers as they take it to the best waves on the planet. Scenes from the Wedge, Teahupoo, Hawaii, NorCal and beyond will have you pining to get out into the big blue and kick into some of your own. In short, the film is both fun and inspiring. Kudos to Keith and the crew on a well made film.

For the Love of Surfboards

We are in the business of surf fitness. It’s a passion of ours, and creating and selling our programs so that surfers worldwide can be more fit, and enjoy the sport of surfing more is what we do. (We also give away lots of free programming on our YouTube channel, SurfStrongerTV.) Beyond training for surfing, and riding waves, we have a passion for surfboards. We thought we’d pause to reflect on some of our favorite boards out there today.

One of my favorite surfboards at the moment, is my 9′6″ Michel Junod log with 9″ Josh Farberow flex fin. I had an absolute blast surfing it in ultra glassy, waist to chest high surf at Leo Carrillo this weekend.

Surfing this past weekend, I admired a really nice log which turned out to be an Almond. Like Almond, all of our products are hand-made, right here in California. Check their tasty boards here.

We’ve talked about this guy a bit before, but we dig Ward Coffey shapes. Ward can shape anything, but we’ve gone to him for years for his high performance short boards.

Surf Stronger’s Serena Brooke Wins Bud Light

Surf Stronger athlete, Serena Brooke recently won the Bud Light Lime Surf Series at C-Street in Ventura. A fit and in-form, Brooke dominated her heats with her patented smooth down the line style and flair. The chilly Pacific didn’t seem to phase the Aussie as she marched through her heats, getting some of the best waves of the whole comp.

Serena is the featured athlete in the popular Surf Stronger–Core Training video, and recently announced her new sportswear line, Serena.

Surf Stronger & Safari Surf Camp in Costa Rica

The inaugural Surf Stronger / Safari Surf Camp in Nosara, Costa Rica was an amazing week of surf, surf fitness, adventure, and fun. The action-packed week featured non-stop swell, surf-specific training sessions, amazing local food and drink, jungle excursions and a heavy dose of Pura Vida, the Costa Rican version of Aloha. The well-run and happening Hotel Tucan (Safari Surf Camp headquarters) proved the perfect venue for our inaugural Surf Stronger mission to Costa.

I rolled in to San Jose, Costa Rica off a hassle-free flight from LAX and my excitement level grew as I stepped out of the airport into the warm and inviting Costa Rican night. A zippy cab ride in a clean, orange, compact over to the Adventure Inn, had me swilling an ice cold Imperial bar side before I knew what hit me. The next moring, I headed out to pick up Coach Scott fresh off a red-eye from Northern California. After collecting Coach, our driver, Francisco, motored the van out across busy San Jose, down the verdant mountains and halfway out to Nosara where we met up with international surf star and Surf Stronger team rider, Serena Brooke. Cruising in to Orotina town, it wasn’t hard to spot a tanned and smiling Serena, who had been exploring the country with Costa Rican champion surfer, Lisbeth Vindas. A quick bite at a local soda and some fresh beers and we were on our way out to Nosara!

Joel is Rad

I’ve always been a fan of Joel Tudor for his supercool style, and also his take on surfing and surf culture. Stumbled on this short of Joel surfing, training and cruising on the North Shore of Hawaii. Sure he is training for Jujitsu, and not necessarily surfing, but you get the sense Joel gets the connection between fitness and surfing. Ride on, Joel!
