Coffee — A Cup A Day May Keep the Doctor Away

Here at Surf Stronger HQ, coffee is a big part of our program. We love brewing up a fresh pot before a morning surf, or morning workout. It tastes great, gets us moving, and is a nice little morning ritual. What’s more, recent studies show that coffee may be beneficial to one’s health. One study points out the anti-oxidant properties inherent in coffee. Another study points out that drinking coffee is more healthy then harmful.

We almost always buy organic and fair trade beans when possible. By now, most people are tuned in to the benefits of going organic, but less so with fair trade practices. “Fair trade coffee is coffee which is purchased directly from the growers for a higher price than standard coffee. The purpose of fair trade is to promote healthier working conditions and greater economic incentive for producers.” (Wikipedia) In essence, when you buy fair trade, you are buying into the notion that the coffee producers — often people in third world countries — should be fairly compensated for the wonderful bean that you enjoy. In a way, coffee tastes that much sweeter when you know the growers are being more fairly compensated.

The good news is Organic and Fair Trade coffee need not be that much more expensive than standard coffee. Our favorite is the Trader Joe’s Fair Trade Organic French Roast, checking in at a mellow $6.99 / 13. oz. of whole beans.
